Né aux Etats-Unis en 1927, Richard Kuhn étudie le cinéma à la prestigieuse USC (il aura alors pour mentor Slavko Vorkapitch). Après avoir passé plusieurs années dans le dessin et la publicité, il entre à la télévision (CBS) comme responsable des arts graphiques. C'est à partir de cette période qu'il réalise des génériques de films, notamment à la National Screen Servie (voir ci-dessous) pour des cinéastes tels que Blake Edwards, Richard Fleisher, Robert Aldrich ou encore William Wyler et Federico Fellini.
